The sub-committee would doubtless elect its own

chairman, but the names most frequently put forward in connec-

tion with such an office are those of Dr L.K.Tao and Dr V.K.

Ting. We suggest that vacancies be filled by co-optation,

subject to the approval of the Committee in England.

In view of the multifarious and onerous duties

which would devolve upon the sub-committee, we are of opinion

that it should employ a paid secretary (full-time, if experi-

ence shows this to be necessary) who should be a Chinese and

preferably a speaker of Pekingese or some allied form of kuo-yu.

The selection of a suitable man should be left to the sub-commit-

tee, but he ought to possess a good knowledge of written and spoken English, as an essential part of his duties will be to

conduct the correspondence of the sub-committee with the

Universities China Committee in England.

-

In our tentative budget for a normal year we

have allocated £500 to the sub-committee for its expenses.

These expenses would include the salary of the Secretary.

Provision should, we think, be made for occasional visits of

the Secretary to England. Such visits like those of the

Secretary of the Universities China Committee to China need

not be frequent or at regular intervals, and should be made

only when in the opinion of the Committee or of the sub-commit-

tee as the case may be it is to the interest of one or other

or both that personal contact should be maintained or re-estab-

In our proposed budget we have assigned a sum of £500

and per annum to the travelling, administrative /miscellaneous

expenses of the Secretariat of the Universities China Committee, and it is out of this fund that the cost of the proposed occasion.-

al visits to China and England should be defrayed. We have

lished.

allocated this sum to the Secretariat of the Committee because

we consider that it should be under the Committee's exclusive

control and that no part of it should be at the disposal of the sub-committee for travelling or any other expenses except with the approval and under the authority of the Committee at home.
